So 'NO' you can not file a homestead in Maine. You can however buy land. I have bought forest land for $300/acre and $900/acre. I have 42 acres of forest land that is river frontage. And 105 acres of forest that has no river access. Our property taxes have been running around $1.05 per acre..

We just bought a little over 20 acres in Central Texas, East of Austin, for a little under $3000/acre. The property is about 50/50 trees and pasture with a wet weather creek along the bottom. They were paying the Sisco grocery delivery man $11.00 to $12.00 per pound and my son offered to beat their price, plus his herbs were "local" and organically grown.
